(TOKYO-Kyodo) Seven & i Holdings Co.'s banking unit Seven Bank said Thursday it will increase the number of languages displayed on screens of automated teller machines in Japan to nine from next January to make them friendlier to foreigners and expand their use.
In addition to the Japanese and English now in use at the ATMs, seven languages to be added are Indonesian, Chinese, Portuguese, the Philippines' Tagalog, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Thai, according to the major retailer's bank.
Seven Bank now has about 18,000 ATMs in Japan and the number of overseas remittances through them in fiscal 2012 ended in March this year totaled about 190,000. The bank aims to double the number of overseas remittances in fiscal 2013 and increase the yearly total to 1 million in four years.
As the bank's operating revenues rely mostly on ATM fees, the bank hopes to make the fees for overseas remittances its new revenue source.
